The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have been reaching out to universities across the country in an effort to stem what law enforcement and intelligence agencies characterize as the wholesale theft of technology and trade secrets by China, Iran and Russia.

FBI officials report an uptick in targeting of universities as China continues a massive, orchestrated effort to steal U.S. intellectual property, particularly science and technology research. Meanwhile, DHS’ National Security Investigations Division has become increasingly concerned about the threats posed to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research by insiders posing as students from China, Iran and Russia.
