The 59th annual IACLEA conference at the Wisconsin Convention Center drew 400+ experts from hundreds of universities and 10 countries to downtown Milwaukee for the June 23-26, 2017 preventative campus safety event. IACLEA, or the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, began in 1958 when 11 College and University Security Directors came together at Arizona State University to discuss challenges and solve for problems these institutions faced. Today, the Association is at the center of activity and thought leadership on Campus Public Safety policy and training. IACLEA has grown to 3,700 members at 1,000 universities and colleges that reach across the globe to 15 countries.

This year’s IACLEA served as the backdrop for LiveSafe to celebrate five Universities that are bringing new levels of excellence to their campus security mix. The following distinguished institutions received Awards in Excellence:

Carson-Newman University  Use the broadcast functionality exceptionally well and used LiveSafe tips to prevent two potential suicides.

Duke University  Incredible outreach to their community.

Georgia Tech  Innovative use of multiple orgs to streamline workflow. They have one version for campus police, one for students, faculty and staff.

Ole Miss University  Pioneering use of enterprise IT in a college environment.

University of Delaware  Introduced the informative and entertaining Copline Bling video.

In addition to creating the platform for LiveSafe to celebrate excellence, IACLEA 2017 brought leaders together to address critical issues taking place on campuses and in the greater community in an ever-evolving threat landscape. IACLEA President Randy Burba, chief of public safety at Chapman University noted the significance of preparedness and discussing the array of challenges Campus Public are met with on a daily basis:

“Today’s campus public safety departments must be prepared for any crime, large or small, that occurs in any community,” Burba also articulated the need for officials to collaborate to “seek common solutions.”

This year’s IACLEA conference engaged attendees with four key sessions and over 25 workshops with timely topics including: Leaderships Lessons from Columbine, Sexual Assault, Developing Non-Escalation and De-Escalation policies, Building Communities and Relationship Building with Stakeholders.

Amidst the activity of nearly 30 workshops, four general sessions, accreditation training and a booth hall with over a hundred exhibitors, the highlight of the event for LiveSafe was having the honor of recognizing the five Awards in Excellence universities. Their exceptional efforts and innovative methods combined with their best practices and cutting edge technology are keeping their universities safer, and building stronger relationships with stakeholders.

LiveSafe proudly congratulates Carson-Newman University, Duke University, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss University, and the University of Delaware for their excellence.

IACLEA 2018 will be hosted in Orlando, Florida and will mark the association’s 60th anniversary.
