Commitment to Safety: Boys & Girls Clubs and LiveSafe

For nearly 160 years, the safety and protection of young people have been the bedrock of the Boys & Girls Club Movement, and this commitment to safety is realized every day for the 4.7 million young people served annually by Boys & Girls Clubs.

LiveSafe shares this commitment and wants to help everyone live safe by mitigating risks and preventing tragedies from occurring. LiveSafe’s primary focus is to empower people to gather and report insights to make the world a safer place to work, play, learn, and live.

That’s why Boys & Girls Clubs of America is pleased to partner with LiveSafe to offer their safety platform to you. We are excited about this partnership and the opportunity to further BGCA’s commitment to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and protection of the young people, professionals, and volunteers in Clubs across the Movement.

What is LiveSafe?

Based in Arlington, Virginia, LiveSafe is the leading risk intelligence communications platform that enables two-way communications between users and an organization’s leadership. By leveraging LiveSafe’s anonymous reporting capabilities, as well as its data-driven analytics engine, companies, educational institutions, and government agencies can get ahead of emerging threats and prevent serious safety or security incidents.

LiveSafe will provide your Club with the ability to gather and share information about emerging safety and security risks before they escalate into harm.  LiveSafe can support your Club’s safety initiatives and prevention efforts by enhancing your day-to-day approach to safety.

LiveSafe provides an immediate path to communicating prevention information on a broad spectrum of potential risks. From day-to-day safety hazards or changing weather conditions to serious threats, such as child sexual abuse or misconduct, suicidal ideation, and bullying, LiveSafe provides a secure platform to report suspicious activity or safety incidents directly to Club leadership or your emergency operations team.  Club leadership will now be informed and able to respond quickly and efficiently to protect your Club members and professional staff.

How Does it Work?

The LiveSafe platform is comprised of two key elements: the Mobile App, and the Command Dashboard.  The Mobile App enables users to report suspicious activity and security incidents, contact emergency officials directly and receive broadcast messages.  The app also includes built-in functionality such as a safety map, peer-to-peer tools: SafeWalk and SafeWalk in Drive Mode, and a resource library.

The Command Dashboard is accessible to authorized Club leaders via a browser.  The early warning tips and insights generated by the users are collected in the Command Dashboard, allowing authorized Club leadership to see the tip details and respond appropriately.  The two-way chat feature allows the dashboard operator to chat with the user who submitted the tip in real-time.  The broadcast feature allows Club leadership to send broadcast messages to their users quickly and effectively.  The Command Dashboard is cloud-based, which means that authorized Club leaders can access it from anywhere in the world with internet access and a computer, laptop, or tablet device (e.g., iPad).

How Do I Know I Can Trust LiveSafe?

We have invested significantly into the security of the LiveSafe Mobile Platform to protect your organization and information. We have received the highest level of accreditation awarded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security: The SAFETY Act Designation and Certification.  We are also SOC 2 Type 2 Certified, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Compliant, and protected by multi-level Advanced Encryption. You can check out our certifications.

Our platform is used by Hospitals, Shopping Malls, Financial Institutions, Stadiums, Fortune 100Corporations, Professional Sports Organizations, Global Trade Shows, and Community Events.  Today more than 170 colleges, universities, and K-12 school districts rely on LiveSafe to prevent safety and security incidents and keep their communities connected and informed.

More importantly, within the last year, over 37 Boys & Girls Clubs participated in a pilot to test out the platform. The results of the pilot convinced BGCA to offer LiveSafe to Clubs Movementwide.

I’m Not Comfortable With Technology. Is LiveSafe Hard To Use?

No! The LiveSafe Mobile Platform is intuitive and user-friendly. If you can use a smartphone and a browser you will be comfortable using LiveSafe.  Our engineers designed the platform so it is easy to use.  The majority of activity you will have with the platform is a tap or a click or two away.  We also have helpful videos demonstrating how to use specific features, such as how to create a geo-fence. You will also have access to our searchable Knowledge Base that has articles and FAQs.  If you still need help, we have a support organization that is a click away to answer your questions.

How Would My Club Use LiveSafe Day to Day?

We have found that when our customers use the platform to compliment daily operations, they see the most benefit.  For example, let’s say your Club is on an outing and for some reason, your return to the Club is delayed. You can send a quick broadcast message to your users to keep the parents and professional staff informed of your status.  Another example is a quick change in the weather, that requires a change in plans and quick action.  The broadcast feature keeps everyone informed of the actions you are taking.

When training your Club members on how to stay safe, you can encourage them to “tell someone” by using the app. We have found the people often prefer to share information via text or an app before they will talk to someone.  This compliments your safety protocols and enhances your ability to gain insight. Users can choose to report something anonymously. The ability to report an observation of suspicious activity or a security incident anonymously enables users to feel safe reporting the information and free of potential repercussions.

There is also a special broadcast feature called “Check-in.”  This feature allows you to send a broadcast message to your users to have them check-in with you to affirm they are safe.  This feature is most commonly used during drills as a fast roll call method.  In the case of a lost child, using Check-in may help you locate them quickly and foster coordination with your professional staff.

The SafeWalk feature allows users to virtually walk with family and friends by monitoring their location on a real-time map ensuring a safe arrival at their destination. SafeWalk is one of our most popular features because it allows people to feel secure knowing someone they trust is keeping track of them. For example, a child can use SafeWalk on their walk home from school. Their parent or guardian will be able to oversee their walk to make sure they reach their destinations.

You may also want to use the broadcast feature to remind users of upcoming events, meeting locations, changes in schedules, etc.  The key is that you want to use the platform in normal day-to-day activities to establish a regular dialogue and build awareness and trust so that when you need the users to submit information they are comfortable with LiveSafe.
